SHAMOKIN — Mount Carmel Area High School students are gaining the lead by overtaking Line Mountain for second place. All that separates Mount Carmel from knocking Shamokin out of first place is $1,000.
In middle school action, some crafty investing has given Our Lady of Lourdes a gigantic leap in gains at $161,381, making it rather difficult for the other two schools to overtake its lead anytime soon.
This year’s Pennsylvania Council on Financial Literacy competition offers players in grades three through 12 the opportunity to manage a hypothetical $100,000 portfolio by investing in stocks chosen from the American, New York and NASDAQ markets. The competition, which began Feb. 5 and ends April 13, teaches students about investing and encourages financial literacy through hands-on activities in the classroom.
Sunbury Motor Co. and The News-Item are sponsoring the event for local schools again this year.
